Equity in access

Score: 3

Sherburn Group Practice made sure people could access the care, support and treatment they needed when they needed it.

The building was open from 8.00am to 6.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and 8:00am to 8:00pm on Thursdays. Phone lines opened at 8am and the practice was also open on Saturdays from 9:00am to 10:30am. Home visits were available, ensuring continuity of care for patients who could not attend the practice.

In feedback to the CQC, some patients raised concerns regarding the triage process used by the provider for appointment booking and highlighted long waiting times to get non-urgent appointments. Other patients were more positive however and reported being able to get urgent appointments quickly, liking the total triage system and finding the appointment booking systems operated by the practice convenient and easy to use.

This positive feedback was consistent with the results of the 2025 National GP Patient Survey which showed that the practice performed better than the national average in a number of areas and that people could access medical care when they needed it and in a way that suited their needs, be that by telephone, in person or through the practice website.

For example, 83% of respondents to the survey described their overall experience of the practice as being good, (compared to a national average of 77%) and 80% of respondents described their experience of contacting the practice as good (compared to a national average of 73%).

61% of respondents also stated that they found it easy to get through to the practice by phone (compared to a national average of 57%) and 63% of respondents stated that they found it easy to contact the practice using their website (compared to a national average of 58%).

68% of respondents stated that they waited about the right amount of time for their last general practice appointment however, which was slightly below the national average of 69%.

The practice was located in a purpose built, 3 storey building which opened in 2024. Accessibility within the practice was noted to be good during our visit with level ground access for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, prams and pushchairs, two large car parks, accessible parking and large treatment and consulting rooms. A hearing loop was also available at reception and there was lift access to the second and third floors.

Equity in experiences and outcomes

Score: 3

Staff and leaders at Sherburn Group Practice actively listened to information about people who were most likely to experience inequality in experience or outcomes. They tailored their care, support and treatment in response to this.

Staff treated people equally and without discrimination. Leaders proactively sought ways to address any barriers to improving people’s experience and worked with local services, including within the voluntary sector, to address any local health inequalities.

Staff understood the importance of providing an inclusive approach to care and made adjustments to support equity in people’s experience and outcomes.

Staff followed processes to ensure people could register at the practice, including those in vulnerable circumstances such as homeless people and Travellers.

Staff used systems to capture and review feedback from people who used the practice, and during our assessment we saw that there were feedback forms in reception and that complaints and compliments were monitored and shared with staff members.

The practice was an Armed Forces Veteran Friendly Accredited GP practice. This meant that there was a clinical lead for veteran health who undertook regular training to better understand the needs of veterans and support veterans to access dedicated health services.

It was also a Safe Surgery which meant that the practice did not ask for immigration documentation and patients within their practice area who did not have proof of identity or address could still register and receive care.
