Limefield and Cherry Tree Surgeries is located at 293 Preston New Road, Blackburn, BB2 6PL

The practice delivers primary medical services to a list size of 4103 patients under a general medical services (GMS) contract with NHS England, and is part of the NHS Blackburn with Darwen Clinical Commissioning Group.

The provider is registered with CQC to deliver the Regulated Activities; diagnostic and screening procedures, maternity and midwifery services and treatment of disease, disorder or injury and surgical procedures. The practice occupies two converted and refurbished residential properties on the outskirts of Blackburn. The branch location (Cherry Tree surgery) is closed and no longer provides any primary care services.

The average life expectancy of the practice population is slightly below the national average at 78.6 compared to 79.2 years for males and 82.9 compared to 83.2 years for females. The practice caters for a higher proportion of patients over the age of 65 years (18.3%) and 75 years (9.6%) compared to local averages (13.7% and 6% respectively). The practice also has a higher number of patients with a long standing health condition 55% when compared with local and national averages 51%.

Information published by Public Health England rates the level of deprivation within the practice population group as four on a scale of one to ten. Level one represents the highest levels of deprivation and level ten the lowest.

The practice is a registered partnership, however only one GP partner works at the practice. The male GP is supported by a long term male locum GP, a female advanced nurse practitioner, two female practice nurses (one of which is training to be an advanced clinical practitioner) and a health care assistant. The clinical team is supported by a business manager, an assistant practice manager and a number of reception and administrative staff.

The practice is a training practice for newly qualified doctors.

The surgery is open between 8am and 6.30pm Monday and Friday, with early morning appointment available between 7.30am and 8am Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

We carried out an announced focused inspection at Limefield and Cherry Tree Surgeries on 20 June 2019. We decided to undertake this inspection following our annual review of the information available to us. This inspection looked at the following key questions; Safe, Effective and Well Led.

We based our judgement of the quality of care at this service on a combination of:

  • What we found when we inspected
  • Information from our ongoing monitoring of data about services.
  • Information from the provider, patients, the public and other organisations.

We have rated this practice as good overall and good for all population groups.

We found that:

  • The practice provided care in a way that kept patients safe and protected them from avoidable harm.
  • Patients received effective care and treatment that met their needs.
  • The way the practice was led and managed promoted the delivery of high-quality, person-centre care.
