Letter from the Chief Inspector of General Practice

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Haddenham Surgery on 16 February 2016. Overall the practice is rated as good.

Our key findings across all the areas we inspected were as follows:

  • There was an open and transparent approach to safety and an effective system in place for reporting and recording significant events.
  • Risks to patients were assessed and well managed.
  • Staff assessed patients’ needs and delivered care in line with current evidence based guidance. Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to deliver effective care and treatment.
  • Patients said they were treated with compassion, dignity and respect and they were involved in their care and decisions about their treatment.
  • Information about services and how to complain was available and easy to understand.
  • Patients said they found it easy to make an appointment with a named GP and that there was continuity of care, with urgent appointments available the same day.
  • The practice had good facilities and was well equipped to treat patients and meet their needs.
  • There was a clear leadership structure and staff felt supported by management. The practice proactively sought feedback from staff and patients, which it acted on.
  • The provider was aware of and complied with the requirements of the Duty of Candour.

During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

We found that people who used Haddenham Surgery could be assured of a safe, effective, responsive and caring service from properly supported staff.

We found that there were systems in place to provide mandatory training and support according to individual's needs and responsibilities.

During a routine inspection

During our visit to Haddenham Surgery we spoke with five patients who told us they could access an appointment quite easily, they were happy with the care and treatment they received and felt that staff listened to their needs.

When we spoke with staff and checked patient records we found that patients received the care and support they required to meet their needs.

We visited the dispensary, observed practice and spoke with staff about the systems in place to dispense medicines to patients. We found the dispensary was well run and there were safe systems in place to ensure that medicines were ordered, stored, dispensed and disposed of safely.

Whilst staff were well supported to complete additional training, mandatory training did not always meet their needs and there was no formal system in place for staff supervision. Staff did receive an annual performance appraisal and were able to discuss their individual training needs with their line manager.

We found there were systems in place to monitor the quality of the service. This included an annual patient survey although improvements to the quality of the action plans were required so that patients received feedback about all the issues they raised.
