Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

We did not look at Treating people as individuals during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

The provider did not always promote people’s independence, so people did not know their rights and have choice and control over their own care.

A personalised care plan for a person living in the home contained limited information about their sexual health despite them showing signs of sexual desires in the past. It was unclear whether inclusive and open discussions between this individual and staff had taken place to support their sexual needs.

Although staff supported people to access community facilities to pursue their interests, including visiting parks, shopping centres and music groups often being transported in the providers minibus. We were advised by 3 staff that people do not always go out during the winter months due to the cold and wet weather.

We observed some bedrooms that were bare. Apart from furniture there was very little in the way of personal items or a reflection of their personality or favourite colours. However, in other rooms people had chosen wallpaper and accessories when they moved into the service.

We were told positive examples of staff at the service who had connected 2 people to long lost family who now visit the home regularly.

A staff member told us how they promoted people’s choice and independence, “When showering a service user, I give them the sponge so they can wash themselves and will also provide a choice of clothes so the person can choose what they want to wear.”
