During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out an unannounced inspection at Eastbury Surgery on 9 December 2021. This inspection was focused on the management of access to appointments.

Overall, the practice remains rated as Good

Why we carried out this inspection

This inspection was undertaken in response to information we reviewed which suggested potential issues with access to appointments.

How we carried out the inspection

The inspection was led by a CQC lead inspector who spoke with staff during an onsite visit.

We found that:

  • People were able to access appointments in a timely way
  • The practice offered a range of appointment types
  • There were systems in place to support people who face communication barriers to access treatment
  • There were systems in place to monitor access to appointments and make improvements

This practice is rated as Good overall. (Previous inspection November 2015 – Good)

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Eastbury Surgery on 27 March 2018 as part of our inspection programme.

At this inspection we found:

  • The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.

  • The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.

  • Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

  • Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.

  • There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.

The areas where the provider should make improvements are:

  • Consider ways to improve child immunisation and cervical screening rates.

  • Consider ways to improve patient satisfaction with nurse appointments.

  • Consider ways to identify and support more patients who are carers.

During a routine inspection

Letter from the Chief Inspector of General Practice

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at 08:45hrs on 17 November 2015. Overall the practice is rated as good.

Please note that when referring to information throughout this report, for example any reference to the Quality and Outcomes Framework data, this relates to the most recent information available to the CQC at that time.

Our key findings across all the areas we inspected were as follows:

  • There was an open and transparent approach to safety and an effective system in place for reporting and recording significant events.
  • Risks to patients were assessed and well managed.
  • Staff assessed patients’ needs and delivered care in line with current evidence based guidance. Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to deliver effective care and treatment.
  • Patients said they were treated with compassion, dignity and respect and they were involved in their care and decisions about their treatment.
  • Information about services and how to complain was available and easy to understand.
  • Patients said they found it difficult to get through on the phone and they had to wait a long time for a routine appointment however appointments were always available the same day if urgent.
  • The practice had good facilities and was well equipped to treat patients and meet their needs.
  • There was a clear leadership structure and staff felt supported by management. The practice proactively sought feedback from staff and patients, which it acted on.
  • The provider was aware of and complied with the requirements of the Duty of Candour.

The areas where the provider should make improvement are:

  • Implement further measures to improve access to routine appointments, a named GP and getting through to the practice on the phone.

  • Formalise clinical meetings and ensure discussions are documented.

  • Develop a clear strategy to deliver the practice vision.
