Dr S D Roberts and Partners (known locally as New Court Surgery) are in a modern purpose-built building located in Malvern, in Worcestershire. The building is shared with another GP practice and has primary care teams, secondary care outreach clinics and a coffee shop. At the time of the inspection, the practice had 9885 patients registered. The practice population is the seventh least deprived. Level one represents the highest levels of deprivation and level ten the lowest. The practice has a General Medical Services (GMS) contract with NHS England.

The practice has four GP partners (one female and three male) and two salaried GPs. The practice has a practice pharmacist, a nursing home pharmacist, three practice nurses, two healthcare assistants. The clinical team are supported by a practice manager, a reception manager, a IT manager and a team of administrative and reception staff.

The practice treats patients of all ages and provides a range of medical services including family planning, maternity, NHS health checks, baby clinics, minor surgery and nursing services. It is also a training practice and regularly hosts trainee GP’s and student nurses.

Parking is available on-site and a chaperone service is available for patients who request the service. This is advertised throughout the practice.

The practice is open between 8am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday with extended opening on Saturday mornings 8.30am-12.30pm. Home visits are available for patients who are too ill to attend the practice for appointments.

The practice does not provide out of hours services to their own patients. When the practice is closed patients are directed to contact Care UK via NHS 111.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Dr. S.D. Roberts and Partners on 4 December 2018 as part of our inspection programme.

At this inspection we found:

  • The practice reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines and best practice.
  • There were comprehensive policies and procedures to support best practice.
  • There was an open and transparent approach to safety and a system in place for recording, reporting and learning from significant events. The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
  • There was clearly defined and embedded systems, processes and practices in place to keep people safe and safeguarded from abuse and for identifying and mitigating risks of health and safety.
  • There were clear responsibilities, roles and systems of accountability to support effective governance.
  • The practice worked proactively with other organisations to ensure patients had access to a range of services to support their health and wellbeing.
  • Staff involved treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • The practice responded to complaints in a timely and open manner.
  • There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.
  • All of the 18 patient comment cards and feedback on NHS website were positive about the timely access and quality of care patients received.
