The MWH Practice has two sites; the main practice is in Southall in the London Borough of Ealing, and a branch surgery, The MWH Practice Hounslow, is in the London Borough of Hounslow. The practices provide care to around 8588 patients in total.

The practices are registered as a partnership with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to provide the regulated activities of: treatment of disease, disorder or injury; diagnostic and screening procedures; family planning services; surgical procedures and maternity and midwifery services at two locations. The practice has two GP partners, one salaried GP and three long term locums GPs working a total for 23 sessions amongst them between the two sites. There is a good mix of female and male staff. The practice is in the process of appointing a practice manager. The practice has an assistant practice manager. In addition to pre-bookable appointments that could be booked up to two weeks in advance, urgent appointments were also available for people that needed them.

When the practices are closed, the telephone answering service directs patients to contact the out of hours provider. There were no previous performance issues or concerns about this practice prior to our inspection.

The age profile of the practice population is broadly in line with the CCG averages. Information taken from Public Health England placed the area in which the practice is in the fourth less deprived decile (from a possible range of between 1 and 10). In general, people living in more deprived areas tend to have greater need for health services.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at The MWH Practice on 6 June 2016. The overall rating for the practice was good. The full comprehensive report can be found by selecting the MWH Practice ‘all reports’ link for on our website at www.cqc.org.uk.

This inspection was an announced comprehensive inspection carried out on 29 November 2018. The inspection was planned to check whether the provider is meeting the legal requirements and regulations associated with the Health and Social Care Act 2008, to look at the overall quality of the service, and to provide a rating for the service under the Care Act 2014 as part of our inspection programme.

At this inspection we found:

  • The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
  • The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.
  • Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.
  • There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.

The areas where the provider should make improvements are:

  • Consider providing a moveable shield around the bed in the nurses room to provider more privacy in addition to the curtain rail that is already in use.

Please refer to the detailed report and the evidence tables for further information.
