Equity in access

Score: 2

The service made sure people were at the centre of their care and treatment choices and they decided, in partnership with people, how to respond to any relevant changes in people’s needs. A translation service was available for patients for appointments and the practice website could be translated into different languages. Concerns had been raised with CQC about the provision of home visits to patients. Reception staff said home visits had not been requested in the last two months and any requests would be put to the GP for a decision on the clinical need for a visit. The GP said they would undertake a home visit if the clinical need indicated this was necessary. A paramedic home visiting service was available to GPs in the area and home visits could be referred to this service by the GP if appropriate.

Equity in experiences and outcomes

Score: 3

The service did not always make sure that people could access the care, support and treatment they needed when they needed it. People could access the service online, in person and by telephone. Treatment rooms were situated on the ground floor and a bell to alert staff if a patient required assistance had been fitted to the entrance. A loop system was available for patients who were heard of hearing. The National GP patient survey for the period January to March 2024 showed patients satisfaction with the overall experience of contacting the practice was 53% slightly below the expected 67%. The Friends and Family Test for the period October 2024 to January 2025 showed patients were positive about their experience and access to the practice. Concerns were raised with CQC about a lack of GP appointments particularly in an afternoon and patients being directed to out of hours services inappropriately. Concerns were also raised about a lack of nurse appointments. GP appointments were available between 09:30 to 11:30 and then 12:30 to 14:30 with a mix of face to face and telephone appointments. Requests for appointments in an afternoon were triaged by the GP or directed to out of hours services. The GP said anyone under 5 years, or the elderly would be seen in the surgery. Nurse appointments were available every Monday afternoon. The nurse was fully booked until March 2025, but baby clinic appointments were still available. Primary Care Sheffield Enhanced Access service provided GP and nurse appointments at local practices when the practice was closed booked via the patient’s own GP practice or via NHS111. Information provided by the commissioners showed the practice was the highest user of the Enhanced Access hub appointments in the Primary Care Network and high users of Sheffield Out of Hours appointments and minor’s accident and emergency services indicating appointments may not always be available at the practice to meet patient need.
