People should be cared for in a clean environment and protected from the risk of infection (outcome 8)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Providers of services comply with the requirements of regulation 12, with regard to the Code of Practice for health and adult social care on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 28 June 2013, observed how people were being cared for and checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care. We talked with people who use the service, talked with carers and / or family members, talked with staff and talked with commissioners of services.

Our judgement

People were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment.

Reasons for our judgement

People we spoke with told us they liked living at Cartmel Old Grammar and said they were happy with the accommodation provided in the home.

We looked all around the building and found the home was clean and free from any unpleasant odours. People who lived in the home and visitors we spoke with confirmed the home was always clean and odour free.

One visitor told us they had noticed significant improvements to the cleanliness of the home since the new provider and manager took control of the service in March 2013.

We saw that care staff followed safe procedures to prevent the risk of infection. Suitable equipment was provided throughout the home including disposable gloves and aprons and antiseptic hand wash. The staff we spoke with showed they understood why it was important to follow safe procedures to protect people from the risk of infection.

South Lakeland District Council had carried out an inspection in December 2012 to check food hygiene standards in the home. The service was awarded the highest rating of “5 stars” which meant food hygiene standards were “Very Good”. This meant people were protected from risks associated with the preparation and provision of their food and drink.
