During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we visited in January 2014 we found that parts of some treatment rooms were dirty and unhygienic, and that the process to clean instruments used in dentistry was potentially unsafe as up to five staff needed to work on the process at any one time. At this visit we met with the practice manager, who is the registered manager, and the lead nurse for infection control on that day, looked at records pertaining to control of infection, and went to the treatment rooms where there had been problems and the room where instruments were decontaminated.

We found that the measures taken by the provider and staff were effective and the practice was safe and clean.

Shortly before this visit, we received information from a patient that their examination by a dentist had been too brief to be effective. The practice manager showed us that staff recorded the times that patients entered and left their appointments, so any query could be checked. The shortest appointment during our visit was nine minutes. Processes were in place for the provider to check dentists' examination practice and to regularly audit record cards, which showed what dentists had checked during examinations.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we toured the premises and met with the registered manager and nine staff on duty. We looked at documents related to the running of the service. We spoke with eight people who used the service.

People told us they were happy with the service. One person said 'My dentist was excellent ' kind, gentle and caring. The nurses are very nice. I have been able to get appointments when I need ' they fitted me in recently when I had a problem". Another person told us that for a busy practice they thought the staff were efficient and managed to help them when they needed attention.

People told us they had been happy with the care provided. One person told us that all their children had attended this practice, none of them were frightened of the dentist and none of them had decay as they had been well looked after and advised about how to look after their teeth.

We found that staff were well supported and provided with the training they needed. Good systems were in place to check for the safe and satisfactory running of the service. We found some areas of treatment rooms were not maintained in a hygienic way. The registered manager had taken action before this visit with respect to some of these areas.
