During a routine inspection

We found evidence that ABK Caring Service Ltd was well led and run in the best interests of the people who used the service and that it provided a flexible reliable service. Comments recorded within 'spot check' records and the provider's quality assurance system were noted to be very positive.

Records viewed showed that support plans covered all aspects of a person's individual circumstances. We found that there were appropriate arrangements in place to ensure that the management of medicines for people who used the service were safe. We found that there were sufficient numbers of staff available to meet the needs of people who used the service. Appropriate arrangements were in place to ensure that complaints were managed effectively and that people who used the service and those acting on their behalf felt listened too and any issues raised were dealt with.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

On our visit to ABK Caring Services, we saw that improvements had been made to supporting the staff. Administrative and management systems had been put in place in order for staff to be supported consistently and to a required standard.

The improvements included the development of a system of spot checks and observations of staff practice. Training sessions were organised and attended by staff on a range of topics. A rota of one to one supervision sessions and staff meetings had been set up and sessions had been held with staff.

During a routine inspection

The people who used ABK Caring Services were very happy with their care and support. They spoke highly of the staff and said they were kind and caring, usually punctual, friendly, courteous and respectful. People felt involved in their care arrangements and knew who to call if they needed to speak to someone. They felt safe with the carers and had no complaints about the service. One person said 'The carers are all lovely and I have got to know them all, they help keep me as independent as I can be".

The staff told us that ABK Caring Services was a good company to work for. The management was flexible and approachable and provided opportunities for training.

At the time of our inspection on 18 September 2012, we saw that monitoring systems for involving and caring for people, safeguarding, recording and managing the service were in place. Effective staff support systems including supervision and appraisals were not in place. The manager told us that staff meetings, supervision and appraisals needed improvement.
