Safe environments

Regulations met

Staff and leaders told us of the systems in place to manage risks for patients, staff, equipment and the premises.

At the inspection on 20 August 2025, we found the practice had made the following improvements to comply with the regulations:

Staff told us they knew how to respond to a medical emergency and had completed training in emergency resuscitation and basic life support every year.

Staff described the processes they had in place to identify and manage risks, including risk assessments for the use of sharps.

The practice had also improved their processes for the servicing and maintenance of the equipment and facilities.

The premises were clean, well maintained and free from clutter. Hazardous substances were clearly labelled and stored safely.

Dental materials and cleaning products had up-to-date safety data sheets accessible to staff, and risk assessments for all products were in the process of being updated, in line with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.

We saw satisfactory records of servicing and validation of equipment in line with manufacturer’s instructions, including servicing of the compressor, air conditioning and water heater. The practice had implemented a service agreement with an external contractor to ensure their equipment is serviced and validated at the correct intervals.

Fire exits were clear and well signposted, and fire safety equipment was serviced and well maintained.

A fire safety risk assessment was carried out in line with the legal requirements and actions recommended within the risk assessment had been completed. We saw that the fire alarm and emergency lighting had been serviced, and records of periodic testing and checks of the fire alarm, emergency lighting and fire extinguishers were available. We also saw a fire evacuation drill had taken place and a satisfactory Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) had been carried out.

The management of fire safety was effective.

Arrangements to ensure the safety of the X-ray equipment were effective and the required radiation protection information was available.

Safe and effective staffing

Regulations met

At the inspection on 20 August 2025, we found the practice had made the following improvements to comply with the regulations:

The practice had a recruitment policy and procedure to help them employ suitable staff, including for agency or locum staff. These reflected the relevant legislation. Information relevant to staff employment in the role as required under Schedule 3 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 was available for all staff.

Improvements had been made to the arrangements to ensure staff training was up-to-date and reviewed at the required intervals. The registered manager had access to the computer-based system that was used to monitor staff training and development and had implemented the use of individual files for each staff member.

We saw the practice had effective processes to support and develop staff with additional roles and responsibilities.

We saw evidence that staff had received appropriate support, training and professional development and could demonstrate that they had undertaken all continuing professional development relevant to their roles as recommended by the General Dental Council.
