During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

The provider had taken the necessary actions to ensure patients were treated by staff who had been assessed appropriately to ensure they were able to perform their role. References and Disclosure and Barring Service checks (DBS) had been obtained. The provider had also ensured all staff received training on the Mental Capacity Act(2009). This meant patients would be supported to make decisions about their treatment. Patients who might lack capacity to make the decisions themselves would have their best interests taken into account.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four patients and observed one treatment session.

The patients we spoke with told us that they were involved in the decision making process which included consent before any treatment was given, and that they signed their treatment plans. However,staff were not aware of the mental capacity act and the action to take if a patient did not have the capacity to consent.

The dentists treated patients with respect and ensured that they had the information needed in order to be able to treat patients appropriately. Patients we spoke with described the practice as "very good, pleasant", "reassuring" and "friendly".

The practice had systems in place to minimise the risk of infections due to cross contamination and the practice looked clean and orderly.

We looked at two staff recruitment records and found that the provider had not obtained the necessary information checks as described in Schedule 3 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010. We saw that staff had good levels of supervision during their probationary period. The practice had a database for record keeping including for staff records however the system had not been implemented in a way that allowed staff records to be retrieved in a timely way.

The practice had systems in place that assessed and monitored the quality of the service including patient surveys and audits of clinical record and X'Rays.
