Our view of the service

Date of assessment was 22 July 2026 to 29 July 2026. Sutton Lodge is a ‘care home’ providing personal care and support to older people and/or people living with dementia. At the time of the assessment, the service was supporting 20 people with their personal care needs. This assessment was a focussed assessment.

Sutton Lodge was last rated requires improvement (published 26 February 2026.) The provider was previously in breach of the legal regulation in relation to safe care and treatment and good governance. Improvements were found at this assessment, and the provider was no longer in breach of these regulations.

Improvements had been made, and the provider had demonstrated better oversight of the service. The provider had ensured all staff were clear about their individual roles and responsibilities. Checks had been completed to ensure staff had carried out required tasks, and where risks had been identified, these had been communicated to the management team for follow-up. Management changes had taken place, and the registered manager was back at Sutton Lodge from managing one of the providers other locations and a new deputy manager was in post. A range of new systems and processes had been introduced and embedded within the service.

Improvements had been made to staffing levels, and we observed sufficient staff were deployed to meet people's care and support needs safely and effectively. People and those important to them had been involved in care planning and risk management. Risks had been assessed, and measures had been implemented to manage known risks. Accidents and incidents had been recorded, investigated, reviewed, and lessons had been learnt to reduce the risk or mitigate the risk from reoccurring. The provider had followed the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 for people who had been deemed as lacking capacity to consent to their care or decisions. Staff knew people well, and we observed positive and meaningful interactions between staff and people using the service. Activities had been planned with people and staff had taken account of people’s likes, preferences, and interests. Throughout our assessment we observed staff were kind and caring.

People's experience of this service

People were not able to tell us about the care and support they received, so we obtained views of care from relatives

Relatives told us they felt their family member were safe, one relative said, “[family member] is very safe, [person] looked after brilliant.” Another relative told us, “I think [staff] have had training, they’re lovely. They would call the GP if [family member] was poorly.”

Relatives were contacted and updated regarding people’s care. One relative told us. “I’m confident my relative is looked after well, [staff] let me know if [person] has fallen or not well. They’re safe.”

We were told staff were caring and people’s privacy and dignity was maintained. One relative told us “Staff are caring, I see them and I watch them. I think they’re good with [person’s] privacy and dignity, [staff] always take them to the bathroom for changing. And bathing and washing all seems okay.”

Relatives were happy with the activities their loved ones had access too. One relative told us. “The activity person is so good, they do so much.”

All relatives we spoke to told us it was well managed and they would recommend the care home. One relative said, “I would highly recommend it here.” It’s well managed, it’s like being at home.”

Relatives and residents were provided the opportunity with meeting face to face to discuss what is working and what improvements could be made, one relative told us “There’s monthly or bi-monthly residents/relatives meetings. Overall, it’s very good.”
