During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

The provider sent us an action plan that explained how they would address the issues we had raised. We spoke to the manager of the clinic who confirmed that this plan was followed. We found that appropriate action had been taken to ensure that a vitamin injection prescribed for clients would be given by a qualified nurse. This meant that clients were protected from the risks associated with medicines.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection of 08 May 2013, we found that there were systems in place for staff to safeguard people who used the service from the risk of abuse. However, concerns were expressed by a significant number of people we spoke with about the alleged disrespectful attitude of a member of staff. We had also found that there were no written risk assessments carried out to ensure that only safe and suitable staff worked with people who used the service.

At this inspection, we spoke with four people who used the service. People told us that all of the staff treated them with courtesy and respect and they said that no staff were disrespectful to them.

We found that action had been taken to resolve the issues raised previously, concerning the handling of medicines in the service. However we found that further improvements were needed to ensure that people were better protected from the risks associated with medicines.

8 May 2013

During a routine inspection

We met nine people who were receiving treatment at Gladstones Clinic on the day of our inspection. We talked with them about the support and treatment they were receiving. We also spoke with staff about how they supported people who were receiving treatment at the clinic.

People we spoke with had mostly positive opinions of the treatment they were receiving to enable them to recover from their addictions. One person told us 'I find the detox support workers are top notch, they get you, you can genuinely have a laugh with them'. We were also told, 'the counsellors are excellent' and 'the treatment is very good, their best intentions are to get me clean and sober ".

Some improvements were needed in the arrangements for recording and administration of medicines.

There were systems in place for staff to safeguard people who used the service from the risk of abuse. Concerns were expressed by a significant number of people we spoke with about the alleged disrespectful attitude of a member of staff.

The provider had failed to risk manage the suitability of staff to work with people who used the service. This meant people who used the service were not fully protected from the risk of unsuitable staff.

There was a monitoring programme in place to check on the quality of the treatment that was being provided. This included people giving feedback about their treatment at the clinic. This showed people were involved in reviewing the treatment they received
