Our current view of the service

Requires improvement

Updated 18 March 2026

Date of assessment: 30 March to 29 May 2026. The Laurels Residential Care Home is a residential care home providing accommodation and personal care to up to 40 people. The service provides support to older people and younger adults, including those who may be living with dementia or have a physical disability.

At the time of our assessment there were 35 people using the service. At the last inspection the rating was requires improvement, at this assessment the rating remains requires improvement.

The provider was previously in breach of the legal regulation in relation to good governance. Improvements were not found at this assessment, and the provider remained in breach of this regulation. Some focus was needed to strengthen management oversight of medicines, care planning, training and learning from incidents. The manager and provider were open to feedback and took responsive action to any issues we identified during this assessment.

Learning from incidents was not fully embedded into practice, limiting service improvement. However, staff were knowledgeable about safeguarding and recognising signs of abuse. Concerns were reported to the local authority and relatives were informed of incidents.

Whilst people were supported safely, some people were at risk of not having their needs fully met as staff had not received all necessary training. Some improvements were needed around infection prevention and control (IPC). Some care plans required further information to ensure staff could support people more effectively and some environmental concerns were also raised.

Staff knew people well. The provider worked corroboratively with other health professionals to support people.

There was evidence of positive risk taking, demonstrating people could openly make their own decisions regarding the care they received. The provider was open to feedback and had already started to address the concerns raised.

People's experience of the service

Updated 18 March 2026

We spoke with people, their relatives, and healthcare professionals about the care provided. People told us their needs were met promptly, and they felt safe and well cared for. One person told us, “They look after me." Another person said, "I feel very safe."

Feedback was consistently positive regarding the support offered by staff and we observed staff being caring, attentive and respectful. Comments included, "Staff are nice," "Staff are very helpful and very accommodating" and "Staff are nice, they work hard."

Staff engaged well with people and sought consent before assisting them with their care. One relative told us, "It's little things like knocking on the door before entering their room; they are always polite and caring and very good."

People were treated with kindness, empathy and compassion. We observed frequent warm interactions with people, and staff treated people with dignity and respect. Staff knew people well and encouraged people to make decisions regarding their daily routine and be as independent as possible.

However, some relatives told us they were not always involved in the care planning and we received mixed feedback regarding relatives being kept up to date with any changes about people’s health or their care needs.
