During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

During this inspection we did not speak with any of the people who use the service. We carried out a desk top review to follow up on a compliance action we issued on 19 June 2013 as the provider did not ensure that people who used the service were protected against the risks associated with the presence of asbestos at the service. When we visited on 19 June 2013, an asbestos survey had not yet been carried out. This meant that staff, visitors and people who use the service could be at risk of injury from asbestos. The provider sent us an action plan following the 19 June 2013 inspection visit and told us they would arrange an asbestos survey and would be compliant in this area by 30 November 2013.

The provider sent us a copy of the asbestos survey which had been carried out 6 November 2013. One area of asbestos had been identified which was outside of the building at the roof edges, 'under cloaking to tile edges'. The survey recorded that this posed a low risk to staff and the general public as it was not accessed by them. In addition the provider informed us that they had held a meeting with the practice manager in December 2013 and agreed that the provider would continue to monitor the building and record any changes. They would also inform any contractors carrying out maintenance of the roof that there was asbestos in that area. The provider also told us that a copy of this survey was located in the service's health and safety file for easy access for staff.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with six people who use the service. Five people told us they were very satisfied with the service received at the practice. One person said "the doctors are good and helpful, especially Dr Rajan" and "he treats me with dignity and respect ' in some other practices there is an in and out culture, but not here. He makes you feel like a human". Another person told us "the nurse is the best! And the doctors are okay too". However, one person we spoke with was not satisfied, saying "they don't tell you everything in detail, it's always just the basics" and "the doctors here are fine with minor illnesses only, they can't cope with serious ones".

We found that, for most people, their care and treatment was planned well and they experienced good medical outcomes. We found that people were protected from the risk of abuse, and cared for in a clean, hygienic environment. However, we found that the provider had not taken steps to ensure the premises were safe.

The provider had ensured that staff working at the service were qualified, skilled and experienced. We also found that the provider had taken steps to improve the service through quality assessment and monitoring.
