Our view of the service
The assessment commenced on 1 April 2025 and concluded 30 April 2025. Cedar Lodge is a residential care home providing support to older people, including those living with dementia, and, or mental health needs. At the time of our visits there were 23 people using the service. We last inspected the service in August 2022, we rated the service requires improvement following the inspection in 2022. During which time between inspection CQC had monitored the conditions placed upon the service.
At this inspection we found the service had improved. We have rated the service Good in the three areas we assessed: Safe, Responsive and Well Led. People told us of the kind attentive staff that supported them. There were sufficient suitable staff with appropriate systems in place to keep people safe. People’s care plans and risk assessments had sufficient detail to enable staff to keep people safe. Systems and management of infection control, cleanliness, maintenance and development of the environment were acceptable and met people’s needs. Management and oversight of the service had developed well. Governance systems and audits were effective. There was a desire to work with others, learn from events and this was demonstrated in the outcomes for people.
People's experience of this service
Cedar Lodge was able to provide individualised care and support to people in a manner that suited them. The registered manager stated that each person who came to Cedar Lodge was taken on their own merits. People were able to lead a lifestyle suited to them. People were able to be themselves.
People were happy to be at Cedar Lodge. It was evident that people were allowed to be themselves and were not persuaded to join a predetermined culture of a care home. Individuality was respected.
Three of the people we spoke with said they’d tried other care homes and didn’t get on with them, but Cedar Lodge was where they felt settled.
One relative said of the staff, “They are caring and are lovely. Good rapport. It’s really quite heartwarming how gentle they are.”
We observed staff kindness and acceptance of how people expressed themselves in their home.
