Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

Staff treated people with kindness, compassion and respect. People had good relationships with staff. They knew each other well. One relative told us the staff were kind “Yes, very much so!”

We observed sensitive and respectful care. Staff treated people well and there was a relaxed, calm and happy atmosphere. People appeared to trust staff because they listened to them and placed them at the centre of what was happening within the service.

People were given information in easy-to-understand formats and using pictures. A staff member told us, “What I have always tried to do is to follow support plans and think about how would I like to be treated” Another staff member told us “[Name] I give [them] choice of textures; we let [them] smell the soap/creams so [they] know what is going on. [Another name] can’t see with their right eye so we move objects close to [their] eye. We know [Name] likes blue and red clothes.”

People were asked if they preferred a specific gender of staff who supported them, and this was respected.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

Staff treated people as individuals. They knew and understood people’s needs and preferences. Staff offered people personalised care and support depending on their needs, abilities and wishes. People’s cultural and religious needs were noted in their care plans.

Staff organised celebrations for religious, cultural and special occasions. People were supported to take part in outings when they wanted this.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People were able to make choices about their care and support. Staff offered choices in a way which was meaningful and clear. Within the service, people were able to move around unrestricted.

Everyone took part in different activities of their choice. Staff supported people to take part in activities within the community, including clubs and using local community facilities.

One staff member told us the way they communicated with a person who had a sensory impairment by doing simple signs and gestures on their shoulder or hand. In order to facilitate choice around clothing, the staff member told us the person can choose clothing by feeling the cloth; can point to different utensils to indicate the drink they wanted. The staff member said [Name] is able to communicate well once you know [them].”

Although people were limited in how much they could do independently, they were encouraged to do the tasks they could such as laundry or tidying their room.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

Staff responded to people’s immediate needs. They monitored people closely and took prompt action when people became ill or when they noticed something was wrong.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 2

Staff told us they enjoyed working at the service and felt there was good support. However, half of the staff we spoke with reported a concern regarding the team they felt had not been fully addressed. They said this impacted on the effectiveness of the team to work cohesively.
