Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People’s care plans identified which aspects of their care people were able to do themselves and where they required support from staff. Staff supported people to maintain their independence. A person commented, “They let me get on with the bits I can do and just help me with the bits I can’t (do). Which is what I want.” A relative explained that the staff supported their family member if they wanted to walk around to improve their mobility and they assisted with exercises. Staff explained how they supported people to maintain their independence while still ensuring the person received the care they needed. Staff members said, “I prompt to see what client can do. I encourage clients to be as independent as they can be. I would speak with my supervisor if I thought a client might need an occupational therapy assessment or equipment to promote their independence”, and “I treat people as individuals and give everyone the same respect.”
