Our view of the service

Green Gables is a residential care home providing care to adults some of whom were living with dementia. It is registered to support up to 11 people. At the time of our assessment there were 10 people living at the service.

We carried out this assessment on 10 August 2026. This service was previously rated as good. We carried out this assessment to confirm whether the rating of good remains accurate. This report does not provide detailed information on areas where we found practice continues to meet a good standard. Instead, our findings focus on any areas where the service needs to improve or where we found exceptional practice.

The provider had systems and processes in place to support people to receive safe, effective and person-centred care. Care records were generally detailed and reflected people's individual needs, preferences and routines. Risks to people were assessed and managed appropriately, and staff were provided with clear guidance to support people safely whilst promoting their independence.

People can only be deprived of their liberty to receive care and treatment with appropriate legal authority. In care homes, this can be done through a procedure called the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), which is part of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). We checked whether the service was working within the principles of the MCA and how they managed DoLS within the service. We found that staff and management worked within the MCA. DoLS authorisations were appropriately applied for and overseen. People were not subject to unlawful or excessive restrictions they had choice, control and freedom over their lives. This was reflected in our observations throughout assessment. People were observed moving freely around the home, choosing where they wished to spend their time, whether they wanted to participate in activities and what they wanted to eat and drink. Relatives also told us people were supported to make choices about their daily lives and maintain the greatest possible level of independence.

The service provided a homely and welcoming environment which supported people's comfort, wellbeing and independence. People's bedrooms were personalised and appropriate equipment, environmental checks and safety arrangements were in place. Staff received the training, supervision and support required to carry out their roles and demonstrated a good understanding of people's needs and how these should be met.

The provider used recognised, person-centred approaches to support people's nutrition, hydration and future care needs. People's nutritional needs were well supported through detailed care planning, regular monitoring and tailored interventions where required. Staff understood how to identify and respond to risks associated with poor nutrition and hydration, and worked with people to promote good health and wellbeing. Staff were observant to changes in people's needs and took appropriate action when concerns arose.

A particular strength of the service was its culture. The registered manager and staff consistently promoted an ethos that Green Gables was people's home and that people should be treated with kindness, dignity and respect. Observations throughout the assessment demonstrated this approach was embedded in daily practice. People were supported by a consistent staff team who knew them well and understood their individual preferences, routines and support needs.

The provider also demonstrated a commitment to continuous improvement. Systems were in place to review practice, learn from feedback and drive service development. The provider engaged with external organisations and quality improvement initiatives and had implemented additional oversight through the use of external audits and staff champions.

Most governance systems were effective; however, some audit processes required strengthening. In particular, further development of medicines audits and oversight of repositioning records was required. The provider responded positively to feedback provided during the assessment and took immediate action to address the areas identified. We found no evidence people had come to harm as a result of these issues.

Overall, the assessment found a caring and person-centred service with a strong culture, committed leadership and a clear focus on providing people with high-quality care and support.

People's experience of this service

Feedback from people and relatives was overwhelmingly positive. People told us they were happy living at Green Gables and spoke warmly about the support they received from staff. One person told us, "I am happy here, everyone helps" and another described staff and people living at the home as "all pals." People appeared comfortable and relaxed in the company of staff and we observed warm, positive interactions throughout the assessment.

Relatives consistently described the service as a "home from home" and told us staff went above and beyond to provide personalised care and support. One relative said, "I have got my nanna back, I am a granddaughter again instead of a carer," whilst another described the staff as "absolutely fantastic" and said they would recommend the service without hesitation.

Relatives repeatedly told us they felt their loved ones were safe, well cared for and treated like family. One relative said, “Staff treat [Person] as if he was their own family member" and explained they knew their loved one was in "safe hands." Another relative told us, "They know when something is wrong with [Person] before I do," reflecting the strong relationships staff had developed with people, and their detailed understanding of their needs. Several relatives also commented positively on the consistency of the staff team and the reassurance this gave them.

Feedback demonstrated people experienced caring and compassionate support from a staff team who knew them exceptionally well. Relatives told us staff involved them in decisions, communicated effectively and supported people to maintain their wellbeing, independence and quality of life. All relatives spoken with told us they would recommend the service to others requiring care and support.
