Boscombe & Springbourne Health Centre Walk in Service provides medical services to anyone in need of an urgent medical appointment across areas in and around Bournemouth including tourists and visitors on Saturdays and Sundays.

The service is for minor emergencies only and on the day immediate necessary appointments. The service requests that long term conditions, medicine reviews, sick notes and repeat prescriptions should be dealt with by the patients’ usual GP. Patients with major conditions such as broken bones are directed to the accident and emergency department at local hospitals.

Patients are seen on the day, on a first come, first served basis. The service is open from 8am to 8pm, with the last appointment at 7.45pm. Reception staff are able to give patients an indication of when they are likely to be seen. If there is a significant wait, patients are able to return to the service closer to the time they have been given.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Boscombe and Springbourne Health Centre on 6 October 2018, as part of our inspection programme. This was the first inspection of the service.

At this inspection we found:

  • The service had good systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When they did happen, the service learned from them and improved their processes.
  • The service routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.
  • Staff involved and treated people with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Patients were able to access care and treatment from the service within an appropriate timescale for their needs.
  • There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.
