During an assessment under our new approach

We found the practice had met regulations.

The practice had effective systems to identify and manage risks, including infection prevention and control.

Staff had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.

Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.

Staff provided care and treatment in line with current guidance. They treated patients with dignity and respect and ensured access to care, support, and treatment when required.

The practice is in Herne Bay, Kent and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

The practice is located on the first floor of the building and accessed by a flight of stairs; there is no lift available. Car parking spaces are available, including dedicated parking for disabled people, near the practice.

The practice had 3 treatment rooms. At the time of our inspection, there was a total of 12 staff, of which there were 4 dentists, 3 dental nurses, a dental therapist, a dental hygienist, 2 receptionists and the practice manager. We gathered feedback from staff and spoke to a range of staff during our inspection, including 2 dentists, 3 dental nurses, the dental therapist, both receptionists and the practice manager.

The service provides cosmetic treatments, some of which are not in scope of CQC regulation and are not covered in our inspection.

Two weeks before our inspection, we asked the practice to encourage patients to share their views of the service with us. We received feedback from 8 patients. On the day of our inspection, we saw patient feedback from a further 2 patients. Patient feedback provided a positive view of the dental team and care provided by the practice.

6 March 2014

During a routine inspection

We spoke with 10 patients, both dentists, the practice manager and a dental nurse.

We saw that the practice had a system for gaining consent and that treatment and consent forms had been consistently completed. Clear written information was provided to patients about their various treatment options and the costs involved. One person told us, "The dentist explains everything to me and I am often given a choice." Another commented, "I went to this practice for a second opinion and was given a choice and time to think about the different options."

Patient's medical and dental health needs were accurately documented in their records. Medical information that could have an impact on patient's treatment was reviewed regularly and kept up to date.

The practice was clean and hygienic and the staff followed appropriate infection control procedures in line with current legislation. One patient told us, "The practice is always clean to a high standard."

We found that there were effective recruitment and selection processes in place for the selection and management of staff, and the staff had had the necessary recruitment checks.

The provider had systems for dealing with any complaints and for patients to make comments.
