Caring
Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.
The person was given freedom at the service to spend time how they wished and was able to freely access the communal areas. We observed the person happily coming and going throughout the service and interacting with staff when they chose to. The person was supported to make choices through the use of pictures. A staff member said, “We encourage [the person] to be involved in their day to day living.” Staff also observed the person’s behaviour and noted their vocalisations to ensure their wishes and choices were communicated and respected. A staff member told us, “We are always observing and noticing any changes in vocalisations or changes in behaviour.” Support plans detailed how the person made choices and staff respected and facilitated these decisions.
Staff were supporting the person to develop their independent living skills. This included supporting with laundry, simple meal preparation, and food shopping. A staff member said, “[The person] is gaining confidence with this and it's empowering them to be more independent.”
Staff supported the person to maintain relationships with those that were important to them. Visiting was encouraged, and the person’s relatives confirmed they regularly visited the service. There were some restrictions to visiting times to ensure the person’s dignity and these were detailed in their DoLS authorisation.
