Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Care plans contained goals which had been developed with people. Each goal, known as 'Smarties', had clear steps identified and described how people had been involved in the process.

Staff encouraged people with minimal input and advocated a ‘doing with’ rather than ‘doing for’ approach. People were encouraged to take part in daily routines and develop independent living skills. We observed people making choices about where they spent their time without any restrictions.

Feedback from staff was positive. They spoke about the importance of working with people to develop their independence and maintain skills. A member of staff told us; "Definitely get independent choices, always happy throughout the day. We support them when they need it, but encourage them to do things themselves." Staff described how they recorded what people had done and the support they needed. This helped them provide a consistent approach when supporting people to develop their independence. People who shared accommodation were supported to make individual decisions about how they spent their time. A member of staff told us; "They are not treated as one unit."
