During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection in January 2014 we identified that people's records did not contain accurate and up to date medical history details and that the medical emergency kit was unsuitable. We found that the infection control policy did not reflect the procedures adopted by Ice Dental Spa staff and effective infection control measures were not in place. We also identified concerns surrounding the checks that had been completed on the staff.

During the inspection on 23 April 2014 we found that the provider had made the required improvements. We found that people's records contained details of people's medical history and that these were updated at each appointment. The medical emergency kit was sufficiently stocked with suitable medicines and equipment. We found that the infection control policy had been updated and improvements had been made to ensure adequate infection control measures were in place. We also found that the required checks on staff had been completed.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people who used the service and they all provided excellent feedback about the service they received. One person told us that since using Ice Dental Spa they had experienced pain free dentistry for the first time. Another person told us that they felt like part of the family and were given adequate information about their treatment options, and given assistance to make the right decision to meet their treatment needs.

We found that people were treated with dignity and respect and were involved in deciding their treatment plan. We found that people received an assessment of their needs before they received any treatment but there were not appropriate arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable medical emergencies. We found that arrangements in relation to cleanliness and infection control, and recruitment procedures, required improvement. We found that suitable procedures were in place to handle complaints.
