Date of Assessment: 30 May to 4 June 2025

Bitterne Surgery is a GP practice and delivers service to 17,900 patients under a contract held with NHS England. The National General Practice Profiles states that there is a higher than average number of people aged below 44 registered at this practice. Information published by Office for Health Improvement and Disparities shows that deprivation within the practice population group is in the 3rd decile (3 out of 10). The lower the decile, the more deprived the practice population is relative to others. This assessment considered the demographics of the people using the service, the context the service was working within and how this impacted service delivery. Where relevant, further commentary is provided in the quality statements section of this report.

This assessment covered the Responsive key question. People were involved in decisions about their care. The service provided information people could understand. People knew how to give feedback and were confident the service took it seriously and acted on it. The service was easy to access and worked to eliminate discrimination. People received fair and equal care and treatment. The service worked to reduce health and care inequalities through training and feedback. People were involved in planning their care and understood options around choosing to withdraw or not receive care.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Bitterne Surgery on 3 May 2018. This inspection was as part of our inspection programme and was the first inspection of this practice as it had completed several registration changes.

At this inspection we found:

  • The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
  • The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.
  • Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.
  • There was a focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.
