During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we visited the service in January 2014, we found that there were some quality monitoring systems in place, however more needed to be done to ensure that quality monitoring was robust. Radiograph audits were not being carried out at the recommended intervals, as per current guidance and patient record audits were not being recorded.

The provider sent us an action plan setting out how they would achieve compliance. We returned to the service in March 2014 and found that action had been taken to improve quality monitoring within the practice. We saw that a radiograph audit had been carried out and a date was planned for the next one to take place. An audit of patient records had led to positive action being taken to improve the consistency of recording between staff.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five patients as part of our inspection and all were happy with the service they received. Many had been attending the practice for a number of years. People told us they received good explanations about their treatment and were made aware of any costs that might be involved. We viewed examples of estimates detailing how much patients would be paying.

There were suitable arrangements in place for medical emergencies and staff had received training in this area. Emergency medications were available and people that we spoke with had been able to make urgent appointments when necessary. Staff were also aware of their responsibility to safeguard children and vulnerable adults. There were policies and procedures for reporting concerns and contact details for local agencies were available.

There were suitable arrangements in place for infection control and decontamination of dental instruments. Guidance outlined in the HTM 01-05 had been followed. There were some procedures in place for monitoring the quality of the service provided, however more needed to be done to ensure that the system was robust.
