During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced comprehensive inspection on 5 July 2023 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions.

We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations.

The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector who was supported by a specialist dental advisor.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following 5 questions:

  • Is it safe?
  • Is it effective?
  • Is it caring?
  • Is it responsive to people’s needs?
  • Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic appeared clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to manage risks for patients, staff, equipment and the premises.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • Clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect. Staff took care to protect patients’ privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system could be reviewed to accommodate requests for urgent care.
  • The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved, supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • Complaints were dealt with positively and efficiently.
  • The practice had information governance arrangements.

Background

Mydentist - Wrose Road - Bradford is part of a group provider Mydentist. The practice is in Bradford and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There are steps to the practice therefore it is not accessible to people who use wheelchairs. On-street parking is available near the practice. The practice has made reasonable adjustments to support patients with access requirements.

The dental team includes 3 dentists, 3 dental nurses including 1 trainee, 1 dental hygienist, 1 practice manager and 2 receptionists. The practice has 3 treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with 2 dentists, 2 dental nurses, the dental hygienist, both receptionists, the practice manager and a group compliance manager. We looked at practice policies, procedures and other records to assess how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday and Thursday 8am to 5pm

Tuesday 8am to 7pm

Wednesday 8am to 6.30pm

Friday 8am to 2pm

Saturday 8am to 4pm (alternate weeks)

The practice had taken steps to improve environmental sustainability. For example, reducing paper and electrical use where possible.

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Improve processes for learning from patient feedback with a view to monitoring and improving systems to accommodate urgent care requests.

4 September 2013

During a routine inspection

During the inspection we spoke with four people who used the service. They told us they were happy with the services they received. One person said they would not want to go anywhere else. Another person said 'this is the best dentist I have ever been to and I have been to loads'.

People told us they were always given information about their treatment options and one person said the dentist was 'very good at explaining everything'. People said the staff were 'friendly' and they said the surgery was always clean. The people we spoke with were not aware of the complaints procedure. However, they all said they never had any reason to complain and they felt confident any concerns they might have would be dealt with.

We found the provider had appropriate systems in place to ensure consent was gained before they carried out an examination or treatment.

We found the provider had taken steps which ensured the care and welfare of people who used the service. There were arrangements in place to deal with medical emergencies.

We found the environment was clean and tidy and had suitable infection prevention and control protocols in place.

We found the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to ensure staff received suitable training.

We saw evidence there was an appropriate system in place for listening to and acting on people's comments and concerns.
