Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and well-being. A relative said, “We have had other care companies and [family members] independence declined. They [staff] were in and out so fast they just did everything for [family member]. However, this company is fantastic. I can’t praise them enough. They take their time, they get [family member] to do things for themselves and I can see the difference, especially in their mobility. This company is a life saver.” People and relatives told us they had choice and control over their day to day lives and the care they received. A relative commented, “I can’t believe there is a care company out there that is this good. I am very involved in my [family members] care and I feel listened to. They always try to involve [family member] in everything they do. They couldn’t be better.”

One person using the service who spent a large amount of their time in bed was supported to purchase an assisted technology speaker which staff set up so the person could control the lights in the room they spent most of their time in, to ensure they had greater choice and independence. Some people use alarmed medication boxes, where an alarm sounded and enabled them to open the appropriate compartment to take their medication independently. Pharmacy filled dosage boxes were also used by some people to maintain more independence around taking medication.

Some people had been provided with white boards to help with both communication and memory so that appointments or reminders could be written down. The boards could also be used to communicate with a person if they had a hearing impairment. Staff had some cards made and laminated of topics of interest to help make conversations and communication more effective.

Staff had a good understanding of protecting and respecting people's human rights ensuring they were able to make decisions about their care, treatment, and wellbeing. Staff received training about equality and diversity. One staff member told us, “We always involve people in their care and always ensure we have their consent.”

Promoting independence and maintaining skills was at the centre of the care delivery. The care plans focused on what people could do well and the support needed from staff. Care plans also set out when people needed verbal prompts rather than physical support. All these actions helped people to maintain their independence. Staff met with people, their relatives and other external professionals to discuss their support and any changes required, and these were reviewed regularly and updated when a person’s care requirements changed.
