During an assessment under our new approach
HMP Oakwood is a men’s prison located in Staffordshire and operated by G4S. It can hold up to 2134 sentenced prisoners.
Practice Plus Group (PPG) is commissioned by NHS England to provide primary healthcare, mental health, substance misuse services and social care at the prison. PPG is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to provide the regulated activities of diagnostic and screening procedures, and treatment of disease, disorder, or injury.
We carried out an announced focused inspection of healthcare services provided by PPG at HMP Oakwood to follow up the regulatory breaches found during our joint inspection with His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) in April 2024 (https://cloud-platform-e218f50a4812967ba1215eaecede923f.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/sites/19/2024/08/Oakwood-web-2024.pdf)
At this inspection, we looked at a total of 3 quality statements. We found that the provider had made sufficient progress to address the regulatory breaches and was no longer in breach.
The provider had introduced a range of new processes to support the delivery of safe care and treatment for patients; particularly in relation to mental health conditions. Records relating to patient care had been improved and now reflected patients care needs. Managers utilised a suite of audits to monitor service delivery and drive improvements.
We do not currently rate services provided in prisons. We highlight good practice and issues that service providers need to improve and take regulatory action as necessary.
