During a routine inspection

We spoke with 11 people who were living in East Wharf Cottage and Stonebank, stage two homes provided by the Nelson Trust. All of the comments received from people about their treatment were positive.

Comments we received included; People had an active part to play in their care plans, staff supported people to become more confident and independent, all of the people we spoke with were happy with their care and felt staff were approachable and helpful, people and staff agreed that the service had achieved a good balance between therapy and activities.

All of the staff we spoke with felt that Nelson Trust was a good place to work. More than one member of staff said they felt the organisation was run for the people receiving treatment and they were central to everything the organisation did.

We found that the provider was compliant with the regulations and meeting the outcomes inspected on this occasion.

During a routine inspection

There were eight people living in Stonebank House and during the week their time was spent at the day centre working on their self development and meaningful activities.

Our observations were in the home and day centre and we noted that staff were respectful in their approach and peoples' behaviour indicated that they felt comfortable and at ease in their conversations with staff. One person told us "I feel strongly respected."

At lunchtime people spent time in the home's communal areas or in their own rooms but for most of the day they went to the day centre either working in therapeutic groups, planning their week or preparing for a return to independent living. One person said "everything is done here for a reason and for my benefit."

We spoke with staff during our visit. We saw that they had developed good relationships with people and were knowledgeable about their individual care needs.

We looked at peoples' care files and saw that peoples' care and support was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare and promote their well being.

We were shown around the home and saw rooms were personalised, well maintained and provided a suitable environment for people to live in.

We looked at various records including some peoples' care plans, to see how people were being kept safe. Staff training records showed how they were able to meet peoples' needs. One person said "staff have more than enough skills to help me."
