During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced focussed inspection 1 September 2021 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we asked the following three questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services effective?

We found this practice was providing effective care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services well-led?

We found this practice was providing well-led care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Background

Broadwalk Dental Practice is in the centre of Buxton in Derbyshire and provides NHS dental care and treatment for adults and children.

Car parking spaces, including dedicated parking for people with disabilities, are available near the practice.

The dental team includes fivedentists including one foundation dentist, two dental hygiene therapists, ten dental nurses including two apprentice dental nurses, one receptionist and the practice manager. The practice has five treatment rooms, all of which are located on the ground floor.

The practice is owned by a partnership and as a condition of registration must have a person registered with the CQC as the registered manager. Registered managers have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations about how the practice is run. The registered manager at Broadwalk Dental Practice is the senior partner.

During the inspection we spoke with dentists, dental nurses, and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday: 9am to 6pm

Tuesday: 8am to 5pm

Wednesday: 9am to 6pm

Thursday: 8am to 5pm

Friday: 9am to 4pm

Our key findings were:

  • The practice appeared to be visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The provider had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with emergencies.
  • The provider had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • The provider had safeguarding processes and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The provider had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Staff treated patients with dignity and respect and took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The provider had effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Review the practice protocols regarding audits for prescribing of antibiotic medicines taking into account the guidance provided by the Faculty of General Dental Practice.

During a routine inspection

We visited Broadwalk Dental Practice and inspected the premises, spoke to staff and patients and reviewed documentation. We spoke with one of the providers and the practice manager. We found the dental surgeries to be clean, and well equipped, and staff were both professional and knowledgeable.

Broadwalk Dental Practice employed four dentists and one dental hygienist/ therapist. The dental surgery is located close to the centre of Buxton. The dental surgery is located on the ground floor of a building, with access for people with restricted mobility by means of a removable ramp at the front door.

We spoke with two National Health Service (NHS) patients. Both patients said that they were extremely happy with their dental treatment, and both had been coming to the dental practice for several years.

We asked what was good about the dental practice and one patient told us: 'I have been given lots of good advice; the dentist takes their time and is very caring. In fact all of the staff are very pleasant and helpful.' In relation to the same question the second patient said: 'I think the dentist is very competent, all of the staff are very friendly, and if you have to be seen in an emergency (if you are in pain) they will try very hard to make sure you are seen quickly.'
