24 October 2013

During an inspection looking at part of the service

The purpose of this inspection undertaken on 24 October 2013 was to assess improvements made in relation to shortfalls identified during our previous inspection visit of 9 May 2013. We did not request information directly from people using the service on this occasion due to their complex needs. We did however ask them simple questions for exampe if they were happy at the home and they would smile at us.

During our inspection, on 24 October 2013, we found that improvements had been made to ensure that people were given the support they required to consent to their care and treatment.

The manager had put measures in place to ensure that the people who use the service, their relatives and friends were given an opportunity to let their views be known about the quality of the service.

9 May 2013

During a routine inspection

During this inspection we found that staff knew the people living at 18-20 Antelope Way very well and that they supported them in way that encouraged their independence and respected their privacy and dignity.

We found that although staff encouraged involvement from people and their families in making decisions about their care, not all staff were aware of their responsibilities in relation to capacity assessments and making best interest decisions.

The care plans and other information showed that people's needs were assessed and staff were given the information they required to meet people's needs. The relative of one person told us, "The staff are good at everything, they know (name) very well and he has come on leaps and bounds since living there".

All staff had received training in safeguarding vulnerable adults and policies and information was available so that they knew who to contact if they suspected anyone had suffered any abuse.

The manager had discussed with staff how they could establish a system to seek people's views on the quality of the service. However at the time of the inspection this had not yet been put in place.

12 November 2012

During a routine inspection

We talked with two people who use the service. Both of them told us that they were happy living at the home. One person told us that they liked their bedroom and that they felt safe. They also told us that they liked the staff and that they enjoyed their trips out with them.

We found that people are encouraged to make decisions for themselves but there needs to be improvements made around completing mental capacity assessments and making best interest decisions for people.

The care plans were detailed and contained the information staff required to provide care in an individualised and consistent manner.

Better arrangements needed to be put in place to ensure all staff were aware of what procedures should be followed in they suspected abuse had taken place.

Records and discussions with staff showed that they felt supported and were offered the necessary training to provide care in a safe manner.
