Background to this inspection

Updated 6 November 2018

Birtle View Medical Practice provides commissioned services under the Alternative Provider Medical Services (APMS) contract within the Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Commissioning Group (CCG) area.

The practice is now part of Hope Citadel Healthcare who provide primary care services in other practices in the Greater Manchester area. The practice benefits from high level support and leadership from the provider as well as access to human resources.

The practice website is www.birtleviewmedicalpractice.org.uk

The practice is responsible for providing treatment to approximately 2844 registered patients and offers services that include meningitis provision, the childhood vaccination and immunisation scheme, facilitating timely diagnosis and support for people with dementia, influenza and pneumococcal immunisations, patient participation, rotavirus and shingles immunisation, unplanned admissions, near patient testing and contraceptives.

Regulated activities include surgical procedures, family planning, treatment of disease, disorder or injury, diagnostic and screening and maternity and midwifery.

Data shows that the age profile of the practice population has a higher number of patients under the age of 18 years and a lower number of patients over the age of 65 years in comparison to the CCG and national averages and that 94% of patients are from a white ethnic group.

Information taken from Public Health England placed the area in which the practice is located as two on the deprivation scale of one to ten. (The lower the number the higher the deprivation). In general, people living in more deprived areas tend to have greater need for health services.

At the time of the inspection the practice consisted of one male, lead GP and two newly recruited GPs, one male and one female, one practice nurse, one health care assistant and one counsellor. The clinical team is supported by a practice manager and a team of administration and reception staff.

The lead GP is a trainer to doctors who are undergoing training to specialise in General Practice. At the time of the inspection there was one trainee GP with the lead GP at the practice.
