Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

Regulations met

The provider had systems to ensure that people who used the service received person-centred care and treatment, that was appropriate, met their needs and was reflective of their personal preferences. Preventive oral health care was encouraged.

Staff kept up-to-date with current evidence-based practice, and had the skills, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles.

The practice invested in the most up to date equipment and materials available.

The clinical director was a specialist prosthodontist and implant surgeon and had a particular interest in full mouth rehabilitation work. They worked closely with specialist colleagues in other disciplines, including orthodontics, maxillo-facial surgery, periodontics and endodontics, to offer multi-disciplinary care and treatment.

The practice offered dental implants. Staff obtained full consent, kept detailed records and had access to the appropriate equipment for the placement of implants.

The practice offered conscious sedation for patients through the use of a visiting sedationist, but this had not been required for several years prior to our inspection.

We looked at 6 patient care records. The information recorded in these patient care records was in line with recognised guidance. We saw evidence the dentists justified, graded and reported on the radiographs they took.

Staff obtained patients’ consent for treatment in line with legislation and guidance and understood their responsibilities under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Staff described how they involved patients’ relatives or carers when appropriate and made sure they had enough time to explain treatment options clearly. One patient told us, “I especially appreciate the focus the surgery team have on maintaining the health of my mouth rather than pushing me towards interventions. I also appreciate the time taken to discuss the necessary treatment options with me, verbally and in writing.”

The practice had systems for prescribing and dispensing of medicines in line with current guidance. They carried out antimicrobial prescribing audits.

Staff felt the practice supported them to develop and enabled them to take on responsibilities. One staff member told us, “I receive plenty of guidance from my manager and colleagues. I’m encouraged to learn and take on responsibilities, and I am always given the support I need to ensure I develop at my own pace.”
