Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Feedback from people and relatives was overwhelmingly positive regarding the caring approach of staff. People described staff as patient, respectful and supportive. One person told us, "Staff take their time, don't rush me. I get worried if I am rushed." Another person said, " Staff are there when I need you."

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

Care plans reflected people’s preferences, values and routines. Staff understood the importance of recognising each person's unique needs and tailoring support accordingly.

One staff member told us, "Care reflects culture and beliefs." Another staff member said, "Care plans are individualised and regularly reviewed."

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People were encouraged to maintain independence and retain control over daily decisions. Care planning identified areas where people could remain involved in tasks and routines important to them.

One relative told us, "Staff encourage [name] to do appropriate jobs and tasks that are within her capability."

A staff member said, "People choose meals, clothes and activities." The Registered Manager told us, "We always encourage people to do as much as they can for themselves."

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Staff knew people well. One staff member said, “If we have any concerns at all we report these, we know people well so if we notice anything we respond quickly.”

Relatives confirmed staff were responsive. One relative told us, “They [staff] let me know straight away.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

 

Staff we spoke with told us they felt supported, listened to and could raise any concerns.
