All Inspections

3 December 2013

During an inspection looking at part of the service

During this inspection we visited three rehabilitation wards, the walk in minor injuries clinic and the outpatients clinic. We spoke with people who used the service, the staff and reviewed the relevant records.

The people we spoke with were generally very positive about the care they received. One person said "The staff have been fantastic and always there when I needed them". Another person said "The staff are very sensible and they have explained all my care to me". The only negative comments we received came from two people using the walk in centre who said they had to wait too long. We saw that there were enough staff to assess and treat people in a timely way and that the number of people attending varied through the day.

People told us they were very satisfied with their care and their needs were met. We found people's care and treatment needs had been assessed, planned for and delivered appropriately.

People said they felt safe whilst using this service. We found the staff had been trained and had access to relevant guidance to protect people from the risk of harm or abuse.

We found that the premises were suitable for the people who used the service and they had been well maintained.

People told us they would feel able to make a complaint if they wished to. We found that people had access to information about making complaints or compliments and the staff had followed the recorded complaints procedure.

During a routine inspection

There are two inpatient wards at Woking Community Hospital. Woking rehabilitation ward and the Bradley Unit. Woking rehabilitation ward has 48 beds and comprises the Alexandra and the Victoria Units. At the time of the inspection there were 42 patients. The Bradley Unit has 12 beds and is a specialist neurological rehabilitation unit for people under 65. All the beds were occupied at the time of the visit.

People had mixed experiences. One relative felt that the care was very poor. The staff did not understand individual patients' needs. There were occasions when patients were soiled and not changed quickly enough. A patient agreed that the 'toilet situation for elderly is not too good'. they (staff) do come but it is a bit slow'.

Other people including patients were pleased with the care they received. Patients said the staff were 'excellent', 'very special people' and 'amazing'.
