Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People’s personal, cultural, social and religious needs were documented in their care plans.

People appeared comfortable with staff and interacted positively with them. We were provided positive feedback from people and their relatives regarding staff at the home. Comments included, “The staff always ask me if I would like help with a shower, getting dressed and so on. They never tell me what to do” and, “I have control over many aspects of my life here, such as where I want to eat my meals, what I want to do during the day, what I want to wear but not so much over the support I need to get up in the morning” and “I feel I can choose what I want to do and when. The staff seem to respect my wishes.”

We observed a variety of activities available, tailored to people’s individual needs and preferences. The service had recently hosted a Halloween party, which people enjoyed, and was planning a bonfire night. People told us, “There’s never a dull moment here, always something we can do and join in with,” and “I like hearing the singing, but I don’t join in.” Relatives were welcome to attend events, and there was a monthly church service that people appreciated. People were also encouraged to go out with relatives or friends if they wished, typically in better weather. During our assessment, one person was preparing for their weekly shopping trip with an old friend.
