Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 4 November 2025. Longwood Grange is a residential care home providing support to older people living with or without dementia. The assessment was to follow up on the previous rating.
The provider worked closely with people and healthcare partners to define and maintain safety, ensuring protection from harm, abuse, and neglect while promptly addressing concerns. Staff were trained in safeguarding, understood their duty of care, and acted quickly when concerns arose, with the registered manager appropriately referring incidents to the Local Authority. Risks were managed holistically through regularly updated care plans, proactive measures such as sensor mats, and timely referrals to specialists. Staffing levels were generally sufficient, supported by dependency tools, safe recruitment practices, and ongoing training.
The provider promoted independence, choice, and control, ensuring people were treated with dignity and respect. Care plans reflected personal, cultural, and social needs, and people reported feeling empowered to make decisions about daily life. Activities were varied and tailored to individual preferences, with events such as parties and church services fostering engagement. People were encouraged to maintain community links and pursue outings, supporting a sense of autonomy and wellbeing.
The provider ensured care was person-centred, with staff tailoring support to individual needs and preferences. Care plans reflected choices and were regularly reviewed with input from people and their families. Staff worked collaboratively with health professionals to maintain continuity and respond promptly to changing needs, such as making referrals for weight management. Information was provided in accessible formats, and communication needs were well understood by staff. Equality and diversity were embedded in practice, ensuring fair access to care and consideration of protected characteristics. People were supported to plan for future needs, including end-of-life care, with involvement from relevant healthcare teams.
People's experience of this service
Residents and relatives consistently reported feeling safe, with no issues of abuse raised. People felt the care received was very good and said that the staff appeared to treat every person equally and respected their wishes. People and relatives reported that feedback was welcomed and acted upon. Feedback from residents and relatives was positive, highlighting staff’s respectful approach and willingness to offer choices rather than impose decisions.
