During a routine inspection

We were unable to speak with people using the service due to their complex communication needs. We observed staff caring for people and spoke with three relatives over the telephone in order to gather information about people's experiences of receiving care and support within the home. We were told, "The staff are very good. If there are any problems during X's stay, I am informed" and "I know they do a good job. Y comes back very happy after each visit."

We spoke with the manager and the person in charge of the day to management of the home as well as three members of the care team about their roles in providing care and support to people. We looked at records which stated how people liked and needed to be cared for. A relative told us, "I get a call 48 hours before each stay to update Z's care plan just in case anything has changed."

We looked at the way medicines were being managed to make sure people received their medication in a planned and safe manner.

We reviewed staff recruitment records to make sure there was a procedure in place to make sure unsuitable staff were not recruited to work within the home.

People's relatives told us they were aware of their right to raise concerns and complaints. We were told, "I've not had to make a complaint. I'm sure if I did I would be taken seriously." We looked at records which showed that people's relatives were encouraged to raise concerns should they arise.

During a routine inspection

We visited Valley Road on 16 May 2012. The visit was unannounced so that no one knew we were coming.

We spoke with relatives who told us they were happy with the service offered at the home. We were told that staff were friendly and polite. Relatives told us they had good communication with the staff team and felt they would be listened to should they have cause to raise concerns or complaints.

We were told that relatives had had opportunities to look around the home and meet the staff before deciding to use Valley Road for their son or daughter's short stay.

We were told that relatives were involved in contributing to pre placement assessments and care plans so that staff had accurate information about people's specific needs and routines.

Relatives told us they felt their sons and daughters were safe at the home.

We observed staff supporting people in a sensitive and respectful manner during our visit and it was evident from speaking with them that they know the people who came for short stays well.
