During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who used the service and three members of staff including the manager. All the people we spoke with told us they received the care and support they wanted. The provider made appropriate arrangements to ensure consent was requested from people. Legal requirements regarding people who did not have the capacity to make some decisions were followed.

People who used the service told us they were happy with staff providing their care and the support they needed. The provider had appropriate procedures in place in the event of an emergency. The provider took reasonable steps to ensure the needs of people who used the service were being met. However, staff had not been provided specific training to support the particular needs of people.

We observed that the premises was clean and tidy. The provider had appropriate policies, procedures and checks to ensure the service was free of infection. However it was not clear how detailed some of the checks undertaken were.

Staff were appropriately checked before they undertook employment with the provider. The provider had a reasonable recruitment process to ensure new staff could meet the needs of people who used the service.

Although there were comments from people that parts of the premises could be updated, no one had any concerns or complaints regarding the care that was provided. The provider had an appropriate complaints process and complaints had been dealt with reasonably.

During a routine inspection

People told us they received the care they needed and wanted and were positive about the staff that supported them. People approached staff without hesitation and staff supported people in a friendly, sensitive and professional manner. Staff knew about their roles and responsibilities in meeting the needs of people who use the service. Some people communicated by facial expressions, gestures and signs as well as by speaking. Staff had a good understanding of the varied communication needs of people living in the home.

People had been involved in the assessment of their needs and in the development and review of their plan of care. We saw people were central to their care plan and took a lead in how their care was delivered. People received treatment and advice from a variety of health and social care professionals.

People told us they made decisions about their lives, which were respected by staff. We saw people took part in a range of leisure activities. People's independence and skills were promoted and supported by staff.

People told us they felt safe and knew who to talk to if they had any worries or concerns. Policies and the training received by staff protected people from abuse.

Staff received training they needed to meet people's varied needs.

There were systems in place to monitor and make improvements to the service provided to people.
