During a routine inspection

All information provided stated that the purpose of the scan was to provide a souvenir/reassurance scan only. All women who arrive for a scan have to complete a terms and conditions form which explains to them the purpose of the scan. This included the cost of the package, the safety of ultrasound and how the service would respond if there were any abnormalities in the pregnancy not previously found. There was one woman having a scan on the day of our visit. When we spoke with them they told us that they thought the service was 'absolutely wonderful.'

We saw the sonographer asking the appropriate questions to carry out an assessment of the needs and the understanding of the women and their families. All women were asked to bring their antenatal notes from their local NHS service when they visited. We were told that this was not a diagnostic scan therefore they would not share any information between professionals unless they felt it was necessary to do so. Employees told us that they did not feel the need for formal appraisal and supervision. One person told us; 'If I was doing anything wrong they (the owner) would quickly tell me about it.' They also said: 'I wouldn't do the job if I didn't want to. I really enjoy it and like being with people'. The owner explained to us that due to the size and type of service offered they did not undertake any formal audits; however they had procedures and policies in place to monitor the service provided on a daily basis.
