During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we inspected the service in September 2013 we asked the provider to make some improvements. We went back on this visit to see what improvements had been made.

We spoke with eleven people using the service and four members of staff. These were some of the things they told us:

'I am very happy here, the staff are very good.'

'The food is good and we get looked after very well.'

'I like my bedroom and everywhere is always clean and tidy.'

'There are activities we can join in with if we want to. We have got exercises this afternoon.'

We found the medication system was being managed safely and people's care files were being brought up to date to make sure they reflected people's current needs.

23 September 2013

During a routine inspection

Prior to our visit the provider had informed us, as required, of the registered managers extended absence from the service. In this report we refer to the acting manager who was covering in the absence of the registered manager.

We spoke with 10 people using the service, three relatives and nine members of staff. These are some of the things they told us:

'The staff are lovely here, if you ask for help you get it. I have a lovely comfortable room and the food is fine.'

'The staff are very nice and they know what they are doing.'

'I have no complaints the staff are very caring.'

'There is plenty of entertainment, last Saturday we had some ballroom dancers in and everyone really enjoyed watching them. The activities co-ordinator is very good and people get taken out shopping, for a walk to music and movement classes and singing.'

'It's better since we have the same staff team in this bit of the home. The staff are lovely very friendly and caring. The food is excellent and I can stay and have a meal with my relative if I want to.'

'I look forward to coming to work, it's a good staff team and things have improved with the changes.'

There were care plans in place and evidence that people's health and care needs were being met.

We found that the medication system was not being managed safely.

We found that staff were being properly checked before they started working in the home to make sure they were suitable and safe to work with vulnerable people. We also found that there were enough staff available to make sure people's needs were met.

We saw there was a complaints procedure in place and people we spoke with told us they would feel able to raise any concerns.

Some of the care records were poor and did not reflect the care that was being delivered.

13 November 2012

During a routine inspection

During our visit to Hopton Care Cottages we spoke with eight of the people living at the home. These are some of the things they told us:

"The food is very good, there is always a good choice"

"I love it here"

"I wouldn't want to go anywhere else"

"The staff are exceptional, I think the world of them"

People also told us that they have made new friends at the home and enjoy taking part in the activities provided including craft sessions, keep fit and going out.

We spoke with a visiting relative who told us that they were very happy with the care provided and said they would trust the staff "with my life".

All of the staff we spoke with said how much they enjoyed working at the home.
