Our view of the service

We carried out a short notice announced inspection to ensure availability of staff and to confirm that there would be appointments that we could observe,

The inspection took place on 16 June 2026.

Early Days Baby Scan Ltd is an independent medical provider offering antenatal ultrasound imaging and diagnostic services to self-funding or private patients. Early Days Baby Scan Ltd is located in Wakefield town centre and is served by good public transport links. The location benefits from on-street public parking, and private car parks are available close by. The service is located on the ground floor of a business property. The reception and waiting area has sufficient seating and leads on to a bathroom. Ultrasound scanning takes place in an adjacent private room with ample space and seating.

The service offers early pregnancy reassurance (from six to 15 weeks pregnancy), sexing/gender (from 15 weeks pregnancy), 3D and 4D (from 24 to 32 weeks pregnancy), reassurance (from 15 weeks pregnancy), and presentation (from 35 weeks pregnancy) ultrasound scans. Depending on the type of scan performed, these might involve checking the location of the pregnancy, dating of the pregnancy, audio fetal heartbeat check, determination of sex, and fetal presentation at the time of appointment. All ultrasound scans are performed transabdominally. Since the last inspection, the service had introduced the option to have a selection of blood tests. The blood tests offered were NIPT - Non-Invasive Prenatal Tests and non-invasive early gender tests.

Staffing at the service consisted of the 2 business owners. This was a scan practitioner who was also the registered manager and a business manager,

We spoke with the co-owners of the business as well as people using the service. We reviewed information provided by the service during and after the onsite visit. During this assessment, we looked at all quality statements across all five key questions. The rating reflects the findings from this inspection.

The service was last inspected in 2019 and was rated good. Following this inspection, the service continues to be rated good.

We found clear evidence that people were asked for their consent to care and treatment and that their wishes were respected. The service was responsive to individual needs, and care was planned and delivered in a person‑centred way.

Clear processes supported safe care, effective teamwork and good decision‑making. The environment was suitable and supported privacy, dignity and comfort. Staff were trained, supported and worked well together to provide caring, person‑centred care.

People's experience of this service

We found that overall, the people who used this service were happy with the experience. They stated staff were caring and compassionate. People in attendance on the day of inspection advised us the staff were very reassuring and friendly. Staff explained what the appointment entailed before commencing, and at every stage advised what they were doing and explained any sensations the women may feel beforehand, for example, telling women the ultrasound gel would be cold before application. We were also advised that the service was transparent about its costs, with no hidden charges.
