During an inspection looking at part of the service

At the last inspection on 24 March 2014 we found the provider was not meeting the regulation relating to the effective recruitment and selection of staff. At this inspection we found the provider had taken all necessary actions and was now compliant with regulations.

We did not speak to patients about the recruitment and selection of staff at the practice. We did however; speak with one of the dental nurses and the principal dentist who showed us the staff records. We found the service carried out appropriate checks on staff to ensure they were suitable to work with vulnerable adults and children. The practice had appropriate recruitment and selection processes in place.

We saw the practice had policies and procedures in place on recruitment and the selection of staff. This that complied with employment law, equality and human rights. Staff files contained the information required by regulation and schedule.

25 March 2014

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with five patients, two dental nurses, the hygienist and the registered provider.

Patients were happy with the quality of the treatment they had received and told us that staff were polite, helpful and professional. One patient told us, 'I'm very happy with the treatment I've had' and another said of the staff, 'They're friendly and helpful and they put you at ease.'

Patients told us that the dentist always explained their treatment options clearly and provided clear information about the cost of treatment. They said that they could always make an appointment at a time that suited them and that they were seen on time at their appointments.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. Staff followed appropriate working practices in relation to infection control and the prevention of cross-contamination. Treatment rooms were clean and hygienic and equipment was tested regularly to check that it was working correctly.

Staff had access to the training and support they needed and opportunities for continuing professional development.
