During a routine inspection

We do not currently rate independent standalone substance misuse services.

We found the following areas of good practice:

  • There were adequately skilled and trained staff, who completed detailed risk assessments and could respond urgently to client’s needs.

  • The service had effective systems in place to adequately deal with complaints and incidents, and learning from these was cascaded to staff throughout the organisation.

  • A full range of treatments, therapies, and medicines were provided in accordance with national guidance.

  • The service worked effectively and productively with a range of other organisations and agencies.

  • Staff treated clients with dignity and respect, listened to them and provided information and choice about treatment options. Clients could provide feedback in a number of ways.

  • Managers monitor staff and team performance, which ensured they were maintaining their performance indicators, and could identify areas that required improvements within regular supervision and team meetings.

However, we also found the following issues that the service provider needs to improve:

  • The premises did not fully meet all the needs of disabled people who wanted to use the service.

  • The service was not notifying the Care Quality Commission of incidents that required notification under their registration.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with two team leaders, three members of staff and with two people who used the service.

The service is provided as part of a recovery partnership in collaboration with another organisation. Addaction continues to provide the regulated aspects of the service.

People told us about the treatment they were receiving and everyone spoke highly of the service they had received. People told us, 'It's brilliant, they are good people,' and 'I can't speak highly enough of the help I've had.'

Staff told us they enjoyed their work and had access to training opportunities. They also commented on the good support within the team. One team member said, "We have great support from both the managers and the rest of the team.'

Care planning documentation was well structured and detailed. It was clear that people using the service had been involved in decisions about their care.

We found the provider had policies, procedures and working practices in place that enabled the quality of the service to be monitored. Both people we spoke with said they had been very happy with the service and would feel comfortable speaking with staff if they have any concerns about their treatment.

When we visited Addaction Nuneaton we did so unannounced. This meant that no one that used or worked at the service knew we were coming. During our visit we spoke with the service manager, team leader, three members of staff, two people using the service and an associated healthcare professional. We also spoke by telephone with an additional three people who were using the service.

The service is provided as part of a recovery partnership in collaboration with another local provider. We were told that Addaction provided the regulated aspects of the service.

People we spoke with told us that they were happy with the service being provided and that staff were non-judgemental and treated them with respect. "They are friendly and helpful, they've helped me a lot" was one comment made.

We saw that assessments had been completed and support plans put in place based on what people wanted to achieve. We were told "I've got a recovery plan based on the goals I want to achieve."

We found that staff understood their responsibilities with regards to safeguarding people.

People we spoke with told us that staff were professional and competent, making comments such as "Staff appear well qualified and good at their jobs."
