All Inspections

29 August 2013

During a routine inspection

There were three people living in the home during our inspection. Due to people's complex needs, we were not always able to speak with everybody about their experience of living there. Where people were unable to tell us about their experiences due to their learning disability, we spent time observing the support they received from staff. We also spoke with three members of staff and the registered manager.

People received care and support that met their individual needs and we saw people's privacy and dignity were respected. People had care records which had been written in a style to support people to understand and included pictures and photographs to support understanding.

Staff supported people to go out and do the things they enjoyed in their home and the local community. People were able to continue to have relationships with family members and family friends.

We saw that people using the service were encouraged to help with cooking and making drinks. This meant people were supported to be independent.

We saw that the provider had an effective system in place to assess and monitor the service, which focussed on improvement.

Medication systems were in place and monitored to ensure people received their medicines as prescribed.

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people using this service. The inspection was unannounced which meant the provider and the staff did not know we were coming. We carried out this inspection as part of our schedule of planned inspections.

We spent time with all three people living in the home and where people were unable to tell us about their experiences due to their learning disability, we spent time observing the support they received from the staff. We also spoke with two members of staff and the registered manager.

We saw people received the care and support that met their individual needs. People had care records which informed staff of how people wanted to be supported.

People who lived at the home were supported to take part in activities that were interesting and stimulating so that they had a meaningful lifestyle. We saw that people using the service were encouraged to be independent and helped with cooking, making drinks, and looking after their home. This meant people were involved in everyday activities of their choosing.

There were systems in place to monitor how the home was run, to ensure people received a quality service. People were able to tell staff what was important to them and influence how the service was delivered. This meant the provider listened and valued what people said.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We saw staff providing support in the home and people were treated with respect. Personal care issues were discussed sensitively and discreetly, and we saw people could decide how to spend their time.

People helped to look after their home and bedroom, including cooking and cleaning and were supported to be as independent as possible. People who used the service and staff told us they enjoyed going out shopping, eating out, walking and visiting local places of interest.

There was information about people's care needs including their preferences and how they wanted care provided. The care records used pictures and photographs to help people understand what was recorded.

People were dressed in their own style and if they needed support. Staff helped people to continue to take a pride in their appearance.

Relatives continued to play an active role and support people and provide care. When important things happened people told us that communication was good.
