During an inspection looking at part of the service

We found that the provider had taken action to improve the service since our last visit in March 2013. Although there were no patients present during this visit, we had spoken with patients and taken their views into account during our previous inspection.

We found that a system was in place to ensure that all emergency drugs were checked on a regular basis, safe for use and available at all times.

Safety checks on the machines used for washing and sterilising dental instruments had been introduced so that people were protected against the risks of acquiring a health care associated infection.

Staff had received training in first aid and resuscitation, and were due to attend an update in infection control practices.

A patient survey had been made available for people who used the service.

During a routine inspection

People who we spoke with said that they were given the right amount of information about their dental support, care and treatment. They also said that they were treated with respect.

All of the people who we spoke with said that they were satisfied with the standard and quality of their dental care and treatment and had no cause to make a complaint.

Inadequate arrangements were in place to manage any dental and medical emergency situations experienced by people visiting the clinic. Improvements were needed.

People's health was protected due to systems and procedures for the management and control of infection. However, improvements were needed regarding the checking and quality assurance of some of the dental instruments and sterilising equipment.

All of the people who we spoke with had positive comments about the competencies and skills of members of staff. However, improvements were needed to ensure that members of staff had up-to-date skills and knowledge regarding infection control and approved resuscitation techniques.

There were inadequate quality assurance systems in place to guarantee that people who used the service were always provided with safe dental treatment and care. Improvements could also be made to provide people with opportunities to make suggestions or comments about the service.
