All Inspections

25 September 2013

During a routine inspection

We were unable to speak to the patients who used the service because it was not appropriate, so we looked at records, feedback forms and spoke with staff who co-ordinated the service at the medium secure unit.

Patients who used the service received appropriate care and support that met their individual needs and patients indicated that they felt that they were treated with dignity and respect. We found that patients understood the care and treatment choices available to them.

We saw that records were kept of the treatment patients received and that patients had signed to agree to future dental treatment.

There were good standards of hygiene when the dentist and nurse visited the unit. We found that the staff of Advanced Healthcare logistics were following best practice guidelines for surgical instruments and hygiene.

Staff received appropriate support at work. Staff were qualified to carry out their work and had undertaken training in line with their professional development requirements.

There were effective systems in place for checking the quality of the service provided. The service had an effective process to assess and monitor the quality of service that people received and to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of the people using the service.

12 March 2013

During a routine inspection

We were unable to speak with any people who used the service. At the time of our inspection Advance Heathcare Logistics provided a service once a week in a hospital in Bristol. This service was provided by one dentist and a dental nurse. We looked at six care and treatment plans and saw that signed consent had been obtained before any treatment had taken place.

We looked at feedback forms that had been completed by four people who used the service. They all stated that the person was happy with the dental service that they had received. On one form the person had written, "The dentist was very professional in the service provided."

We saw that the service had an up to date policy and procedure on the safeguarding of vulnerable adults as well as a public protection policy. During our inspection we looked at the recruitment files for the two people, a dentist and dental nurse, who were contracted to provide the service. The records contained evidence of the person's qualification for the role for which they had been employed and evidence that they had suitable insurance provision as independent contractors.

Regular meetings were held with the matron of the unit for which the service was provided. Minutes of the meetings confirmed that ways in which the service could be developed and improved had been discussed. We saw that a risk register was held showing that risks had been identified and assessed, whilst actions to mitigate the risks had been taken.
